Anatomy of a follicle

Hair starts growing at the bottom of a hair follicle which is a tunnel-shaped structure in the epidermis (outer layer) of the skin. The root of the hair is made up of protein cells and as more cells are created, hair grows out of the skin and reaches the surface. What is the role of hair follicles?

Exogen (Shedding) Phase - essentially an extension or a part of the telogen stage of hair growth. During the exogen phase, hair is shed from the scalp.
